Bon Vivant Delicatessen - A little slice of Europe

According to Berge Bakian the joy of a good deli is worthy of poetry. The owner of Eastland’s newest deli-café has been in the business for over 35 years. His mission? To continue finding the very best range of high quality, hard-to-find continental goods. “My dad was a pastry chef,” Berge says. “That’s where my interest in food started. I love fresh food, unusual cheeses, smallgoods…” he explains. “It’s what I love; I need to pay a poet to describe it!”

At Bon Vivant, Berge’s passion for the deli merges with his business partner Zena’s vision for a great café experience. Customers are invited to browse the deli’s range of cheeses, pickles and cold cuts to create their own sandwich or focaccia to go along with their coffee. “Our cafe menu really showcases the quality of the produce that we sell in the deli,” Zena explains.

Berge lights up when speaking about his expansive range of deli goods that includes cheeses from France, Italy, Spain, the UK and US alongside a huge range of charcuterie and artisan smallgoods, venison and duck salami and specialty pasta. And that’s just the half of it. “Do you want to hear it all?” he says with a laugh. “He’s always trying to outdo himself!” Zena adds. “He finds the real specialty products you don’t see elsewhere.”

For the sweet tooths, Bon Vivant also offers a range of French-style cakes by Don’t Lose Your Temper, a Melbourne-based patisserie headed up by two former Vue de Monde pastry chefs. Their imaginative approach to sweets means that you can expect favourites like eclairs and mille-feuille served up in surprising ways. Just looking for an easy dinner? You can find that too. The shelves at Bon Vivant are overflowing with pasta, ready-made sauces, and countless other specialties from all corners of Europe. With so many delicious continental goods on offer, there’s a good chance you won’t leave empty handed.
