10 Baking Hacks to Make You a Pro in the Kitchen

Follow these to become a better baker in an instant

While you may be a pro at cooking up dinner every night, when it comes to baking the devil is in the details. But with some clever hacks up your sleeve, you can turn your flops into crowd favourites. Follow these handy hints the next time you bake.

Ingredient know-how

#1 Never waste a drop of (wet) ingredients by spraying your measuring cup with cooking spray before you fill it.

#2 To quickly soften a stick of butter, fill a large drinking glass with hot water then tip it out again. Place the glass upside down over the butter and leave for a few minutes.

#3 Chill your cookie dough before baking – they’ll hold their shape better so you won’t end up with a flat cookie.

Baking prep tricks

#4 Dip your cookie cutters into flour before you use them to prevent the dough from sticking.

#5 For choc chips, sultanas, blueberries or dried fruit that won’t sink to the bottom of your batter, first coat them in flour.

#6 After you’ve poured in the batter, tap your cake tin a couple of times to get out the air bubbles before cooking.

Perfect presentation

#7 To cut cakes and slices perfectly, first run your knife under hot water. Then, dry it off before cutting into your sweets for a clean cut.

#8 For crumb-free icing, make sure your cake is completely cool before you start. Then, apply one layer of frosting and let it set in the fridge. Add another layer – you’ll not only have a flawless, crumb-free finish, but you’ll also end up with a double layer of icing!

#9 For a perfect pattern on your birthday cake, use a cookie cutter as a stencil and fill it with sprinkles, coloured icing or other cake decorations.

#10 To make chocolate curls, grate a block of chocolate with a peeler. Move slowly if you want a longer curl.
