Farrah Design Studio Wins Awards

Farrah wins prestigious awards for designs blending form and function, effortlessly

True greatness and awards go hand in hand. Farrah, housed at The Arcade at Eastland, have proven their design studio have the expertise and ingenuity to win. In 2016 Design 100, Melbourne bestowed three prestigious accolades upon the store. Whether they are bringing hand crafted leather accessories to life, or turning ordinary crockery into something extraordinary, Farrah excel in blending form and function, effortlessly.

Farrah achieved Silver Winner status in the Design 100 category for Product Design – Concept. For this prize they rethought the bowl, an object that has stayed more or less the same for millennia. They considered what we really need from our crockery. They knew it could be more than a decorative item on which to serve food - for end users with visual or physical impairment in particular, a different sort of bowl could enhance their dining experience.

Inspired by nature, Farrah borrowed from the spiral shape of the seashell to create the unique piece. But rather than being simply circular, it has a round flat table in the centre surrounded by deep, wide grooves that “folds” food onto utensils as it is pushed around. The table part of the bowl can be re-purposed to cut food into smaller pieces without reaching for another plate; this can be difficult to accomplish for people that are not able-bodied.

The bowl is perfect to use in medical settings, and it is also beautiful to look at. Farrah did their research and they knew that for a bowl to achieve commercial success it had to win over the mainstream. Otherwise, people would avoid buying it simply because of an association with medical use. To the untrained eye, it looks like art, modern and sophisticated, a conversation piece at your next dinner party.

Farrah were not finished overhauling the dining experience. They teamed up with the Field Equipment Company to create the Sachin Field Kitchen. In essence, this is a portable barbeque or rotisserie that can be used on a camping trip or by the backyard swimming pool. They won another Silver Award from Design 100, Melbourne in the Product Design – Home & Garden category.<link>

Style enthusiasts shopping at Eastland will appreciate The Cufflink designed once again by Farrah. It was the Gold Winner in the Design 100 awards. Similar to a snap buckle on a man’s wallet, a small strap of leather pinches the shirt sleeves closed, affixed by a steel knob. Leather has been rarely seen on cufflinks until now. The modular cufflinks are well suited to match the belts, shoes and hats as the next must-have accessory in menswear.

Farrah designs are award winning creatives designing for people and life, and many of their creations are made right here at Eastland. Come and visit the talented designers in their home environment to find out exactly why they have taken out the 2016 award for Best Small Design Studio.
